There was something in the darkness,
Evil twitching out of sight.
In its madness there is reason,
For it’s coming out this night.
There is hunger, and its hunting,
Patient waits, shadows hide.
Lightning flashes for a moment,
Fangs of horror glisten wide.
In the schoolyard tossing ribbons,
With such laughter, in her hair.
Curls of auburn kiss the moonlight,
Summer evening without care.
All alone she waltzes, twirling,
Brightly sings a dancing tune.
If she only knew what’s watching,
What is waiting, in the gloom.
Clouds start tumbling, heaven’s rumbling,
Wind is racing through the trees.
Now the child she starts to worry,
Turns too quickly, skins her knees.
In the flashing of the night sky,
As she runs it starts to rain.
In the tree-line talons limber,
For it’s feeding time again.
Far across in sleepy village,
Rests a cottage glowing white.
Stands a father, calling louder,
For his daughter in the night.
Bother speaks in muted whispers,
So he grabs his musket quick.
And he races, weather howling,
Panic pushing, worried sick.
Much too far in distant valley,
Near a schoolyard dimly lit.
Keeping pace with tender morsel,
Demon eyes are cat like slit.
Sweet young child with ribbons streaming,
Running wild with lungs on fire.
She now knows that something’s coming,
Tears and rain mix, muck with mire.
Hear it panting, moving closer,
Cutting off its fleeing prey.
Savage beast with jaws of terror,
Fetid breath and scales of grey.
She can feel it on her footsteps,
And she screams as claws catch hold.
Daddy’s pumpkin falling forward,
For not doing as she’s told.
Fate is kind for she can’t see it,
As it drools upon her back.
It should feed but it is gloating,
How divine this trembling snack.
It licks her neck to make her whimper,
Then it rears to make her dead.
As its fangs froth bloody victory,
Daddy’s gun removes its head.
There was something in the darkness …
